Cardiff Events

Just a brief post to let you know about the next Buffalo Boutique and it's little sister event Buffalo Lounge Boutique.
It's a good way to shop and enjoy some cocktails at the same time. Stalls sell vintage bargains, hand-made crafts and all the best from local designers.
You might find a great, unique gift which is better than giving someone a gift that you got in a 3 for 2 offer from Boots!
Putting together and outfit post for you all ready for the weekend and I've got a few new lovely buys to show you.
I am also currently writing a contribution for We Are Cardiff which is pretty exciting.

Spotlight: Guest Blogger Vintage Extraordinaire

I would like to introduce you to Rhiannon from Vintage Extraordinaire.
This is her guest post, enjoy...

Name: Rhiannon Derbyshire

Blog address www.vintageextraordinaire.blogspot.com

A little about me :  Born and raised in Cardiff, but I saught for the bright lights of London as soon as I hit adolesence. I’ve since moved to Epsom (don’t worry no-one else’s heard of it either) to study fashion journalism, and the obvious added bonus is that London is a mere 30-minute train journey away. At the age of six, I told my mum, “I won’t be wearing those Doc Martens” and ever since, I’ve been in charge of my own fashion decisions. Some choices have inevitably been ill thought out (my “sporty spice” phase at the age of 11 for example) but since then I’ve developed a huge appetite for the latest trends and am constantly on the lookout for the ‘must-have’ item of the season. Quite obviously though, I am not Paris Hilton, so I tend to keep an eye out at local charity shops and am an eBay expert, bidding in the last 10 seconds on a pair of battered old brogues.  Nevertheless, I’ve come a long way from being a stroppy 6 year old that refused to wear Doc Martens (I’d love a pair now actually...).

Oh, and I secretly wish I was a 50’s housewife baking cakes all day.

One of my favourite vintage finds :
On my blog, I do a regular feature in which I show off my favourite vintage finds, but the one I’ve had the most wear out of has to be this navy jacket. Bought last September at Beyond Retro (just off Carnaby Street in London. If you haven’t checked it out yet you simply must! It’s brilliant!). It was a steal at £17. As I reached the till, this is approximately, what was running through my head: “Oh my God! How come this is so cheap! It’s brilliant! Ohh I love it. God I’m starving” I added the “God I’m starving bit” because I utter phrase roughly once an hour. Nonetheless, I skipped out of the store with a carrier bag on my wrist and a song in my heart, but there was a down side to this tale of glee. It wasn’t until I collapsed in a cafe to fulfil my stomach’s needs that I noticed that the jacket was just a bit tiny. In my haste, I hadn’t studied the jacket properly, and a glance at the label gave me an idea of the size – “GENUINE SCHOOL UNIFORM.” Well this can’t be good “Size‘s’ – age 7/8”

I instantly had the sinking feeling that I get when I realise I have a deadline by tomorrow morning and all I’ve done is sit by my laptop scoffing crisps. I didn’t want to have to take it back so I tried it on, hoping for the best. The fit was snug, but not unbearably so, and I decided to keep the jacket. The ride home was a bit awkward, our relationship was like with someone you’d had a whirlwind romance with, only to later realise that we hated each other. A few months later, the big chill hit Cardiff, and I found the jacket hidden under a pile of old hats and scarves. The snug fit actually worked to its advantage as it stopped the breeze fluttering through to my pale skin. And the occasional lack of circulation to my wrists was worth it for the warmth. The whirlwind romance was back on track.

My Christmas wish list

It's only 31 days until Christmas. But who's counting?

I know it's not December yet but I'm already thinking about Christmas. The items above are at the top of my list for Christmas (hint hint if any of my family are reading this)

I adore watching Nigella on TV, I find her show engaging and her recipes seem easy to follow and don't need too many fancy ingredients, she tends to use a lot of things that you would have lying around in your store cupboard. I also adore her make up and she inspired me to get an eyebrow pencil. I would love to be a full time Nigella.
I made her Spanish Chicken with Chorizo recipe on Sunday and it was so easy to make and tasted amazing! You can view it here for free on the BBC food website for a limited time.
My effort doesn't look quite as good as Nigella's...

The  cute cushion is from Cath Kidston but I would be happy with any lovely cushion really but that one is my fave.

I know I bought an apron yesterday but I want an oil cloth one which is easy to wipe clean.

I love my digital camera but I really want a Diana Camera, you can do some really cool things with them and I might take a photography class. Take a look at the Flickr group here, how cool are those photos?!

More cute charity shop finds

I had a rare day off so I decided to pop down to Blackwood and I'm glad I did. I found a great apron for £1.50 which was hand made by the volunteers in the St David's Foundation shop. Just before I bought the apron I saw one for ten times the price which I was going to buy but I held back on it which was a good call.

I got the adorable tea pot from Barnardo’s for £2. A very productive day off!
I'm going to look around Albany Road tomorrow in between training and work because I have a three hour gap to fill. I'm going to be looking out for some nicely illustrated books and old music score to make paper Christmas decorations with.

Shopping highlights of the week

I found some adorable things this week. I stumbled upon lovely tea cups in the Well of Hope charity shop in Ystrad Mynach and they were only 75p for all three, what a bargain! I had to rummage around in a box of boring plates and these were right at the bottom.

My dressing table is full of so much clutter and I am forever losing my earrings so I decided to use one of the the cup and saucers to house all of my things and I think it looks pretty cute.

I found the little table gems in John Lewis and they are made by the same people who made the kitsch food picks from my previous birthday party post. I used them to decorate the table at my friends birthday bash on the weekend and there were so many left over I will use them on Christmas day to decorate the dinner table as they are the same colour as my kitchen walls and tableware.

*note to self-proof read before posting! do not get distracted by X Factor

Spotlight on Cardiff Bloggers

I thought I would start a new feature called 'spotlight' where I introduce you to some of the best local bloggers.

The first person I would like to shine a spotlight on is Lucy Sherriff and her blog Vintage Cardiff.

Lucy reviews vintage shops and charity shops in Cardiff and shares all her best finds with you. I think her blog will be a one stop shop for everything vintage.

Can you tell me a little about yourself?
I am 21 years old, studying a PgDip in Newspaper Journalism at Cardiff University.
I love food, fashion, travel and my dog J

How would you describe your style?
My style is mostly a mish-mash of high street and vintage, and whatever I can find in a charity shop. My best looks always come from teaming one signature, good quality piece with charity shop bargains.

Where do you get your inspiration?
I mostly get my style from people watching! I love seeing what everyone else is wearing, and I am inspired by women with original and unique styles.
I find it quite disheartening when I see people dressed head to toe in whatever the latest Topshop mannequin is wearing… it’s just plain lazy!

What is the best item you have found in a charity shop?
My best charity shop find has to be a faux fur mid-length brown coat, which I found in a shop in Gleneagles, Scotland, and paid £10 for. Also, in the same shop, I found a real ostrich skin bag, which usually retail at about £900…I paid £5.50.

Can you give my readers a top tip for finding a charity shop/vintage bargain
My top tips for finding charity shop bargains is to not be put off by their window displays. Most of the staff there are volunteers, and won’t be trained in visual merchandising. You have to be prepared to have a good root around. Don’t be disappointed if you don’t find anything in the first one. Be persistent!

Where is your favourite place in Cardiff?
Cardiff is home to so many amazing places to shop, eat and drink. The best places are often the ones tucked away in arcades. My favourite place for lunch has to be The Plan café in Morgan Arcade. They serve the most amazing homemade soup, and they try to make sure all their dishes are organic and locally sourced. Milgi’s on City Road is a kooky little café by day, bar by night and is a great place to go for a drink. Their cocktails are out of this world, and at night, the place comes alive with Cardiff’s coolest and most fashionable people. Make sure you get there early to nab a place in the yurt- a tent out the back complete with sofas, beds and fairy lights (great place for a date!).

Thank you Lucy for answering all of my questions!

New Vintage Store in Cardiff

I am rather excited about a new shop opening in Cardiff called Nest Vintage.
Nest Vintage Living is run by two friends Anna Knight Shirley Davies.
They specialise in Vintage items for your home:  beautiful china, nostalgic kitchenalia, eclectic glass, embroidered linens and decorative items that add a vintage look to your home.
Along with original vintage pieces they will be stocking new gifts and things for the home along the vintage, country living style theme.
They take a lot of care and time to source new products, in many cases they will be the only stockists in Cardiff.

You can also hire some of their fab stock so you can host your own vintage tea party or bring a touch of class to a wedding or any occasion. Visit their website here for more details.
Be sure to check out this new store it is opening at 9am Saturday 20th of November.

Charity Vintage Event in Cardiff

Another great vintage event going on in Cardiff that I thought I would let you know about

This is the second In Aid of Vintage and I can't wait to go to this one after missing the first one.

There is going to be lots on offer including vintage clothing, vintage accessories, vinyl records, one-off unique jewellery and jumble chic. It's free to attend so no excuses not to pop along.
Make sure you tell all your mates and grab some great bargains because it's all for a good cause.
You can make a full day of it because The Woodville serves great food and their Sunday night quiz is always fun.
I once won a microwave and a crate of beers at the Woodville quiz back in my uni days.
To book a stall contact Rose Tinted at rosetintedvintage@hotmail.co.uk
See you there!

Knit & Natter

Knitting is very much in vogue at the moment and the libraries where I work are offering a way for you to get involved and learn a new skill. There are knitting groups all across the borough of Caerphilly but these three libraries now have thriving groups where you can knit, chat and get a free cup of tea.
The group meets every Friday at 10.30am and carry on until they are all knitted out. They are currently working on a group project and they are knitting chicks for the Velindre Hospital charity.
The ladies meet upstairs every Monday at 2pm and are currently knitting clothing for a local premature baby ward.
New Tredegar
This lively bunch descend upon the library at 10.30 every Monday and knit until we push them out through the door so we can close for lunch.

If you are more of a lone knitter the libraries stock great knitting pattern and inspiration books along with many other types of craft books so you can create your own unique knitted pieces at home.
It would be great to see some new faces at these groups so come along and get involved!
